Sandakan is the second largest town in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. It was also nicknamed as Little Hong Kong due to heavy migration of Chinese from Hong Kong. It has the same tropical rainforest climate as Kota Kinabalu as well. This climate contributes to rich tropical rainforests that are habitats to the wildlife.
When speaking of Sandakan, two things are heavily emphasized by the locals and tourists- fresh seafood and eco-tourism. Get the freshest yet one of the cheapest seafood you can ever have. Once you’ve had the best, everywhere else is just second best.
As for eco-tourism, Sandakan is well-known for its Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, and Turtle Islands Park. These are the places you need to visit if you’re a wildlife lover.
